South Africa’s Quick Bowlers Decimate India
It took the South Africans one marathon innings and four days on the field in Nagpur to turn history on its head. What started out as a worrying cricketing outfit - with the news of Mickey Arthur’s departure - soon turned into one of the most compelling performances by the SA national team on the sub-continent.
Very few cricketing displays have been as complete and unerring as the Proteas’ march to cricket glory. If the Indians assumed that the quick wickets of Graeme Smith and Ashwell Prince were a portend of things to come, then they were horribly mistaken.
The first innings kicked into high gear with Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla. The pair featured in arguably one of the greatest 3rd wicket partnerships - all 340 runs of it. Kallis fell short of his maiden double-ton, but his invaluable contribution of 173 added to Amla’s spellbinding 253 not-out set the game on fire as a batting blitz like none other took over. The Proteas declared on 558/6.
The Indians for their part had no answer to the Proteas’ firepower. That they were mercilessly bowled out by Dale Steyn in a ruthless spell of fast-bowling was testament to the premier fast bowler’s brilliance. Steyn captured 7 wickets for 51 runs in 15 overs. The Indians were skittled for 233 all out in their first innings and for 319 all-out in their second.
