Responses to the article “Rand off lows, but still weak”
I can see it now, Tito is going to push up interest rates, it will help the rand gain a few cents for a day or two and then it will slide again.
Therefore, we will be paying higher interest rates and the rand will still be bad. Unless he pushes the rates up by four or five percentage points (which would be MAD!) it will have little or no effect. We saw this in 2000; this is beyond our control.
I think the best thing would be to lower import taxes for the medium term to help cushion the blow for the consumer. The government would still receive a lot as the prices are higher.
I mean our interest rates are already 10% (investment and lending) higher than America and Europe, our banks are stable, if that is not enough incentive to bring money here, then a 0.5 or 1 percentage point hike will not help. — “pickedlast”
The banks are stable, but the government is in a shambles, very risky. — “pepper”
Response to the article “Global economic crisis has rand on back foot”
International investors are not interested in hearing sappy diatribes of the workings of democracy in times of financial crisis. If an investment looks risky on paper — even in SA — they shy away from it. Japan, Germany and the UK have seen huge stock sell-offs.
South Africa has to clamp down on unnecessary and wasteful spending; it needs to address the exigencies of its populace and restore regional calm. — Brett Chatz, Sandton

Africa Hurts Under Gambling Mystique
The lure of big winnings at casinos in Botswana, southern Africa, proves too much for some to bear and public opinion is coming out strongly against irresponsible gambling.
Radio Botswana, in southern Africa, recently ran a phone-in about gambling. Callers by and large were expressing disillusionment with gamblers' total disregard for their essential responsibilities. Gamblers have been accused of squandering hard-earned cash on slot machines and tables when necessities such as food, education, housing and healthcare are being neglected.
As in any unrestrained activity, excess is negative. The difficulties are highlighted in Botswana - a prosperous African state, where there are pockets of poverty scattered amongst the small population. Casinos in Africa have a mystique, an allure that many people find too hard to resist. And so the dangers of irresponsible gambling are prevalent and their instances are rife.
Tales of the bizarre
People have run away from their families for fear of facing them after squandering hard-earned cash; others have committed suicide as their hopes for repairing the damage done seem improbable. Examples abound, but this all points to a commonality: responsible gambling is in desperate need and in short supply. People tell of being banned from casinos, but then being allowed to gamble once again after the bans expire. The problem is in the ease of money loss. What would typically take Botswana person weeks or even months to earn can be lost in a matter of hours or less. These severe losses bring on suicidal thoughts or worse yet, the deed itself.
Regulations required
Responsible gambling in southern Africa requires a concerted public effort. The government and the casinos need to work with social workers and counselors to inform the public of the real dangers inherent in excessive, unrestrained gambling. Until such time as people are aware of the dangers of property loss, income loss and excessive debt, irresponsible gambling will always be at the forefront of many families' minds.

The REAL Katherine Frisk!
"TODAY I was reminded of Joseph Conrad’s The Heart of Darkness, and I recalled Marlin Brando’s words in Apocalypse Now: “The horror! The horror!”.
Yesterday’s front page took me back to 1986, when a woman in Alexandra was accused of being a police spy. She was necklaced and the heartbreaking visual was of her trying to pull her dress down so the crowd would not see her panties.
So much for Mbeki’s African Renaissance. Mandela’s legacy has been destroyed. If something is not done quickly, our economy will crumble. We will lose investors. Thousands will leave SA , and those leaving will include all from our Rainbow Nation.
Mbeki should resign with immediate effect. The president should be elected by the people — not by a faction of the ANC. — Gail Evans"

Global economic crisis has rand on back foot
AS THE rand slips further into the red, fears of a recession increase.
Global Meltdown Special Report
The global crisis, fuelled by excessive sub-prime lending in the US, has finally arrived on South Africa’s doorstep. The welcome mat was out and the local currency was the first to bear the inauspicious burden.
As a developing economy, South Africa is reliant on foreign direct investment. That liquidity has all but dried up in the interim is a testament to the uncertainty that banks and lenders have with regard to one another.
With a massive and widespread inability to make good on repayments, customers are finding that the credit crunch is more than simple media hype.
When financial institutions provide investment financing against overly inflated property prices, they run the risk of debtors defaulting on payments. When that occurs, lenders have to pay back their creditors by seizing assets.
Because property prices are plummeting there is nowhere to go. Investors became scared, dumped trillions of dollars of stock and companies closed their doors.
The US government proposed a 700-billion bailout plan, hoping to inject liquidity into the market and buy up these toxic assets, but the process takes time to run its course.
During such times, investors shy away from risky havens such as developing economies.
South Africa experienced a considerable and equivalent crisis in 2002 when currency traders manipulated the rand. When the demand for the rand diminishes, by virtue of diminishing investments locally, more rands are required to buy dollars. Exporters flourish while importers have to close up shop. The downside is that foreign goods will become more expensive for South Africans.
And with rising inflation comes the added worry of unemployment. South Africa has additional problems in the current political climate of uncertainty regarding the ANC split, and the problems caused by crime, unemployment and the Zimbabwe crisis.
International investors are not interested in hearing sappy diatribes of the workings of democracy in times of financial crisis. If an investment looks risky on paper — even in South Africa — they shy away from it. Japan, Germany and the UK have seen huge stock sell-offs.
The IMF and regional central banks have joined forces to inject billions of dollars into economies to alleviate fears of a worldwide recession.
Excess liquidity brings problems of its own in low interest rates and hyper- inflation. When money is so readily available, it has no value and prices rise.
South Africa has to clamp down on unnecessary and wasteful spending; it needs to address the exigencies of its populace and restore regional calm.

Big Stan

Starring Rob Schneider and David Carradine
Entertaining from beginning to end
Fantastic! There's simply no other word for the directorial debut of movie funnyman Rob Schneider.
The film tracks the life of a conman who has been undone by the feds. After getting a six-month reprieve from the judge - during which time Stan learns the mysterious craft of a martial artist named The Master (Carradine) he sets off for prison.
There Stan asserts himself as a true leader and a champion for justice. The action comes thick and fast; the story is riveting and fast-paced and it's a successful feature film, replete with adult content, humor and explosive action.
There are many similarities to Sandler's Longest Yard or Redford's Last Castle, but this one is a triumph for Schneider who finally emerges from Sandler's shadow.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Starring: Jamie Lee Curtis and Piper Perabo
Written by: Jeffrey Bushell and Analisa LaBianco
Director: Raja Gosnell
Disney goes Big Brother on Beverly Hills' pooches
Aunt Viv (Jamie Lee Curtis) is simply besotted with her pedigree pet Chihuahua named Chloe (Drew Barrymore). As a successful fashion icon, aunt Viv lives in the lap of luxury with her spoiled little companion.
A serendipitous business call sees aunt Viv entrusting her best friend into the care of her niece Rachel (Piper Perabo). The story starts off inanely, waffles on most of the way and ends up in Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta. A series of bizarre misadventures, an unlikely but foreseen romance and a dream Disney ending make this flick one for the kids or desperately bored adults.
There are some brilliant voice talents, especially George Lopez as the love interest and Andy Garcia as the menacing guard dog - Delgado.
My advice: steer well clear of this drivel

Which rugby fans are alienated by Bok symbol?
The pressure is on the Springbok emblem, once again. The source of pride for millions – with its signature green and gold crest – is facing mounting pressure to leave centre stage.
South Africans of all races have been cajoled by the interests of a select panel of divisive forces, intent on sewing their disgruntled seeds into the fabric of our society. These “thinktanks” of prejudicial activists seek disunity and control. Their rhetoric smacks of overt and racist bias.
Ironically it is their own very voices, trumpeted by Sports Portfolio Committee chairman Butana Komphela, that are the problem. Vestiges of South African pride are viewed with skepticism – including the Proteas emblem and the Bok emblem.
One would be going out on a limb to suggest that it’s because these symbols represent pride to predominantly white people, that they are under the axe. But if this is the reason, their leaders are mistaken. The Bok emblem is the only unifying emblem in our nation. With it players and spectators, of all races, have enjoyed two historic World Cup wins.
Playing devil’s advocate on the issue, Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile alluded to embracing an emblem that all interested groups would endorse. Which groups are these exactly - the non-rugby playing/supporting groups? It’s a feeble pursuit born of hunger for power.
What more could the Sports Ministry or the country want from such a unifying symbol?

LA apartment building gripped in fear
For Angela Vidal (Carpenter)it's business as usual. A documentary-style night out with the LA Firefighters is about to turn into a nightmare.
During a routine call out, the film crew gets ensnared in a terrifying series of events. A sickly tenant in a dilapidated tenement attacks the local authorities.
One by one tenants and officers are savagely murdered, while the local authorities barricade them in the building.
What transpires is a rapid and particularly gruesome gore fest. It's not for the feint of heart and only the camera lives to tell the story...

You Do the Crime You May Do the Time
You Do the Crime You May Do the Time63-year old Trenton bookie could face 3 years in the slammer for promoting gambling, but there is a way out
For Trenton, New Jersey bookie, Alvin D. Brown the curtains have just closed on a lucrative vocation: a successful albeit illegal gambling operation. The 63-year old man pleaded guilty to the crime before Superior Court Judge Thomas Kelly. It was however Brown's probation violation that landed him in trouble. The New Jersey man will begin serving his sentence on January 29 2009.
What's at stake
In return for getting his other gambling charges and violations of the cigarette tax code expunged, Brown gets to serve a 3-year concurrent sentence. Additionally, he surrendered $125,000 and a 1987 Mercedes Benz to the state. He will receive another vehicle and an amount of $27,000. In 2007 the authorities raided Brown's operation center and confiscated in excess of $741,000. This July they recovered almost $90,000 from the North Willow Street den and a further $62,913 from his Crawford Court home.
Mitigating factors
Despite some links to Anthony Tassone Sr. and the Gambino mob family, Brown has been described as a nice guy. He does have 4 gambling convictions against his name but his admission of guilt has aided his sentencing. Police believe that Alvin D. Brown has taken over several gambling operations in the city in recent years. Even with the discovery of weapons and out-of-state cigarettes, he was not charged on those counts because the guns could not be linked to him.
One factor that may get his sentence commuted is his lawyer's application for him to serve in the Intensive Supervision Program. This court-run program could see Brown being released after serving between 3 and 6 months.

Eric Cantona Ad Shut Down by ASA
Eric Cantona gets relegated from his prime-time slot as ASA pulls yet another gambling commercial from the airwaves.
The Advertising Standards Authority in the United Kingdom certainly have their hands full at the moment. They have recently pulled another commercial from British television for it supposedly portrays gambling as a way of dealing with personal problems. In short, the commercial was deemed to be in poor taste. The other commercial pulled by the ASA recently was one by Pokerstars. That ad portrayed gambling as an activity capable of giving confidence to people.
Reaction
The public has reacted with criticism to the ruling, fearing that too much censorship is as bad as what the ASA is trying to prevent. Eric Cantona, the British footballer, was the star of the failed campaign. Those responsible for the ad, Partouche Betting, supposedly meant no harm. According to them, they were merely trying to create a cheerful commercial following England's miserable 2008 Euro outcome.

Our Emblems

The pressure is on the Springbok emblem, once again. The source of pride for millions of South Africans - with its signature green and gold crest - is facing mounting pressure to leave centre stage. Many would consider such a move yet another unceremonious sendoff. The problem is we've seen one too many of those in recent times.
South Africans of all races have been cajoled by the interests of a select panel of divisive forces, intent on sewing their disgruntled seeds into the fabric of our society. These 'think tanks' of prejudicial activists are seeking disunity and totalitarian control. Their rhetoric smacks of overt and racist bias.
Ironically it is these very voices, trumpeted by Sports Portfolio Committee chairman Butana Komphela, that are the problem. Vestiges of South African pride, especially those pre-1994, are being viewed with skepticism - including the Proteas emblem and the Bok emblem. In an increasingly politically correct South Africa, one would be going out on a limb to suggest that it's because these symbols represent pride to predominantly white people, that they are under the axe.
But again, if this is the reason prompting committees to replace the emblem, their leaders are mistaken. The Bok emblem is the only unifying emblem in our nation. With it, our players and spectators of all races, have enjoyed two historic World Cup victories. Neither cricket, nor the national delight(embarrassment) - soccer - could lay claim to such an honour.
Playing devil's advocate, the ANC has called for extensive debate on the issue. Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile remarked: "My view is that emblems are not matters of life and death." He alluded to embracing an emblem that all interested groups would endorse. Which groups are these exactly - the non-rugby playing/supporting groups? It's a feeble pursuit born of hunger for power.
SARU president Oregan Hoskins supports the ANC's position in calling for debate on the issue. But again there is no debate: the emblem has united people across the board with two resounding World Cup victories. What more could the Sports Ministry or the country want from such a unifying symbol.

Why cartoon offends elite
Controversial cartoonist Zapiro has caused a furore with his latest instalment, a sketch depicting high-profile members of the government and trade union members in an unfavourable light.
In Zapiro's cartoon, Jacob Zuma - the Zapiro bunny - is seen with a shower on his head (a cynical reference to Zuma's intonation that his sexual rendezvous with a woman in his house several years ago could not possibly have harmed him - she was HIV positive and he was not wearing a condom - because he had taken a shower immediately afterwards).
Again Zuma's appetite for the fairer sex is shown as he prepares to unfasten his belt and drop his pants to rape the justice system.
It must be admitted the cartoon is brilliantly illustrated, but it is highly offensive in that it depicts personalities in a somewhat unfair light.
If Zuma's sexual antics continue to dog him going into the presidency, then the Zapiro reminders will have contributed to keeping social curiosity piqued.
Recall that Zuma has a bone to pick with Zapiro - the recent scandalous amount of punitive damages Zuma was seeking from the cartoonist were dismissed as simply ridiculous.
The controversy around Zuma has hardly cleared though, what with the arms deal and ensuing corruption.
The obfuscation around the cartoon is simply the issue that media freedom remains - to some degree at least - out of the reach of the monolithic, all-powerful ANC.
It is this hands-off domain that angers the fat cats of the pyramid hierarchy.
To this end, the cartoon is offensive, because there is precious little that the ruling elite can do to silence the voices of dissent among many South Africans.
NBA Restores Tarnished Reputation
Is the sun really setting on the criminal underbelly of illegal NBA betting?
History
It was scandalous; it was unheard of. It rocked the foundations of the National Basketball Association, and all but obliterated public trust - news of 13-season referee Tim Donaghy's illicit gambling activity. The former ref-turned-inmate was sacked, tried and incarcerated for wire-fraud and sports betting. The NBA's golden image was tarnished and the NBA empire brought to its knees.
Clean up
Allegations of underground ties to the mafia are rife in the NBA. And the referees in particular are under pressure to distance themselves from any implications of untoward conduct. David Stern, the beleaguered NBA commissioner, has been burning the midnight oil to restore credibility to the game. Stern was quoted saying, "I feel betrayed by what happened on behalf of the sport, regardless of how protective I've been." He believes the scandal lives and dies with Donaghy, although the jury is out on that one.
Beyond the scandal
2007 has come and gone and Donaghy is doing his time for the crime. A former federal prosecutor, Lawrence Pedowitz, in his 116-page review - on behalf of the NBA - absolved the association of any other wrongdoing. The Donaghy Affair was deemed ‘an isolated event.' But even that report was somewhat misleading - Pedowitz himself suggested that there was greater interaction with the NBA and the illegal gambling world. Indeed on page 16 of his report, 14 months later, footnote 24, Pedowitz alludes to significant cooperation between the gambling world and the NBA. The gambling world is seen as a helpful barometer in monitoring unusual betting activity on matches.
Stern response
David Stern enlisted the help of a retired U.S. Army general to gather evidence to refute Donaghy's allegations of pervasive corruption. Stern believes the scandal ended with Donaghy's conviction, others are less convinced. But the roots of suspicion run deep and there remains uncertainty about how many officials are involved. However, with a clean bill of health being given, the NBA is fighting fit. The rules are so strict that refs can't gamble or provide information to anyone, other than their immediate family, regarding details of their travel schedules or the games they are going to work at.

Deception

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams
Improbable and unlikely
That’s the best way to describe Hugh Jackman’s latest feature film. Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s way too similar to Jennifer Aniston’s Derailed, coupled with it’s complete lack of inventiveness. In short Deception bombed.
At the heart of the story is a conman named Wyatt Bose (Jackman). He befriends a reclusive auditor named Jonathan McQuarry (McGregor). Together the pair enjoys the finer attractions of New York City. But it’s a friendship carved in deceit.
When McQuarry falls for a beautiful call girl (Michelle Williams) he doesn’t realize the awful mess he’s landed in. And so begins a series of twists and turns with violent consequences.
The verdict:
The film was obviously a creation of an over-active imagination with scant regard for real-time events. Hugh Jackman fails to impress with his larger-than-life presence on screen. The storyline, while exciting, is poorly communicated.

Presidential Prediction

With less than a month to go, it's Barack Obama all the way to the White House.
Republican supporters will be gasping in shock and horror as the race for the White House takes on a sea of blue. That's Democrat blue for political aficionados. In less than a month an eight-year reign of Republican rule will come to an abrupt end. The Democrats will ascend the mantle of the nation's executive and Barack Obama is the man leading the charge.
The "Change" slogan has proven too much for a Republican camp with nothing but war rhetoric to cling to. McCain, a decorated war veteran and champion of a man, has failed to assert himself during the worst economic crisis the United States has faced since the Great Depression of 1929.
What McCain backers cling to is the hope that their man will be able to turn things around in the swing states which have already swung Obama's way. If the remaining debates are able to convince viewers that McCain is the most qualified to lead the nation, he will have to develop and define a clear economic plan.
This the Republicans have failed to do. McCain has piggy-backed on Obama's policies, clinging to the coattails of a universally popular candidate. That McCain was able to draw off Sarah Palin's allure for a short time, was a mere flash-in-the-pan. Palin is neither fit to lead at the highest level, nor is she sufficiently knowledgeable of world affairs.
The desperation of the Republican camp has precipitated a string of aggressive commercials, intent on drawing Democrats into a street fight. So far the Democrats are biting at this sensationalism. While Obama is clearly the stronger candidate, he is not yet assured of a resounding victory. The reasons are twofold: He is a black candidate with exceedingly liberal views, and he has failed to win over Hillary Clinton supporters. For a largely conservative white America, this may be a factor, but times they are a changing.
If the Republicans can come up with a quick-fire strategy to work off people's fears - regarding Obama's associations or policies, they may be able to turn things around. It's a big if and it's unlikely given the horrific mess that both Wall Street and Main Street find themselves in. Senator McCain needs to turn his weaknesses into strengths by finding his feet in this election. He needs to convince people that he is the better overall leader - but is he...

Double Murder Sparks Gambling Probe
As the devastated parents of murdered victims seek justice, Newcastle crime could be linked to online gambling underworld.
Brutal
For Zhen Xing and Xi Zhou it was game over on August 9th 2008. The pair shared an apartment at 8 Croydon Road in Newcastle's west end. Police were alerted to the scene after 4 30pm, where they made the shocking discovery.
Both victims were severely assaulted prior to being murdered. It is believed that the 25-year old pair was tortured for up to an hour before they were killed. Their bodies were badly beaten and the male - Zhen Xing - suffered massive injuries to his head. Both victims were repeatedly stabbed with a knife.
Motive
The motive was initially speculated as robbery, but deeper investigation into the case suggests that the Chinese pair may have been involved in untoward online gambling activity. Zhen Xing was known to advertise on language websites in the UK, looking to recruit people to report on soccer matches around the world. The reason is simple: Chinese broadcasts have up to one minute delays in their broadcasting. Zhen Xing stood to profit from the time delays in online betting operations.
Sources claim that Xing used the nickname 'lanyang0201' for posting advertisements on these websites, for betting purposes. Further investigation of the couple's personal computers and cellular phones indicate that they were deeply involved in shady dealings. Disgruntled ‘employees' or ‘syndicates' appear to be behind the murders but the underground operation has deep roots.
Betting scams
The nature of Xing's dealings in the past suggests that he was an old hat at the con game. On the day in question speculation is rife that Xing's girlfriend, Xi Zhou may have stumbled upon the attack. She was suffocated by her attackers. What followed was a grizzly double murder, as well as the drowning of their pet cat. Meanwhile the couple's parents were horrified at the news. A cremation service was held on the 17th September and the ashes were flown out to China soon after.
Breaking news
The latest update is that a gang involved in at least 15 violent attacks in London, Manchester and parts of the north east may have been involved. Xing and Zhou had recently taken in a lodger for one of the rooms in their apartment and he appears to be the key to their violent murders. Newcastle police are now eager to trace the lodger. Police are also searching for three people seen outside the flat on the day in question.

Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Michael Chiklis, Billy Bob Thornton and Michelle Monaghan
Director: D.J. Caruso
Jerry Shaw(LaBeouf) is about to get the shock of his life. Within a day of his twin brother's passing, he suddenly finds himself a very wealthy man with an entire arsenal of weapons delivered to his rented apartment. With no idea how things unfolded and the FBI hot on his tail, he is forced into a deadly game of cat and mouse. The antagonist - a computer system - directs him every step of the way. He teams up with Rachel Holloman(Monaghan) who is thrust into this rollicking misadventure. There the two of them are sacrificial lambs in a vicious cycle of calculated violence. But there is method to the madness because a menacing plot is about to unfold and the target is the presidency itself.
College

Riveting comedy
Starring: Drake Bell, Andrew Caldwell and Andree Moss
A group of three high school friends decide to head off to college for the weekend.
Here's a typical teen comedy college adventure story. The plot is paper thin, but the action comes thick and fast. Kevin (Drake Bell) decides to take a wild weekend with his two best friends, after his girlfriend dumps him. What ensues is a weekend of frat parties, hazing and non-stop entertainment. It's far fetched and it's childish throughout; the characters are single dimensional and the talent all but vaporizes from the get go. But there is one thing about College: this is the most raucous 90 minutes of x-rated comedy adventure in a long while. No Oscars here, but boy-oh-boy does it tickle the sides!
